Land Acquisition Advisory Committee

Overview

Preserving natural areas and green spaces is critical for Islamorada to maintain the natural beauty and sense of small-town community that makes our islands a desirable place to live, work and visit. Land acquisition and preservation have been a priority of the Village since incorporation, becoming even more important now, in the face of buildout as established by the Florida Keys Area of Critical State Concern designation. In 1999, a Land Acquisition Advisory Committee was established to make reports and recommendations to the Village Council concerning the identification and prioritization of land acquisitions.

The Committee assisted with the development of a Land Acquisition Selection System, an Action Plan to Retire Development Rights, and the creation of a prioritized list of properties recommended for acquisition. The committee provided service to the Village until 2008 when it was determined that it had completed its responsibilities. In 2021, the Village Council discussed reinstitution of the Land Acquisition Advisory Committee to renew its commitment to this important priority and help reduce the impact the Village will face at buildout. A resolution to reestablish the committee was passed at the November 18, 2021, Regular Village Council Meeting.  The committee consists of up to 10 members.
