Preserving natural areas and green spaces is critical for Islamorada to maintain the natural beauty and sense of small-town community that make our islands a desirable place to live, work and visit.

Land acquisition and preservation have been a priority of the Village since incorporation, becoming even more important now, in the face of buildout as established by the Florida Keys Area of Critical State Concern designation.

In 1999, a Land Acquisition Advisory Committee was established to make reports and recommendations to the Village Council concerning the identification and prioritization of land acquisitions. The Committee assisted with the development of a Land Acquisition Selection System, an Action Plan to Retire Development Rights and the creation of a prioritized list of properties recommended for acquisition. The committee provided service to the Village until 2008, when it was determined that it had completed its responsibilities.

The Village Council recently discussed reinstitution of the Land Acquisition Advisory Committee to renew its commitment to this important priority and help to reduce the impact the Village will face at buildout. A resolution to reestablish the committee will be considered at the November 18, 2021 Regular Village Council Meeting. In advance of the meeting, Council Members are seeking residents interested in volunteering to serve on the committee.

It is recommended that the committee be comprised of ten residents with broad and balanced representation. The Village Council is seeking residents with varied experience, knowledge, or interest in conservation of natural resources, real estate or land acquisition, ecology, land appraisal, land management, eco-tourism, or environmental education. Each Council Member will appoint two residents to the committee. A primary goal of the committee will be the development of an Islamorada Forever Land Acquisition Master Plan in 2022

Residents interested in serving on the Land Acquisition Advisory Committee may complete a Committee Application, contact the Village Clerk Kelly Toth at clerk@islamorada.fl.us or contact a member of the Village Council. Village Council Members email address are available on the Village Council page of our website.
