U.S. Flag Retirement Program
Eagle Scout Project Provides Collection Boxes to Islamorada
Local Eagle Scout Brian L. Neuzil created Flag Collection Boxes for his 2017 Eagle Scout Project. Brian built, decorated and painted the collection boxes that are now on display at all three Islamorada Fire Stations and the Founders Park Community Center. Brian’s completed project ensures that residents and business owners have a convenient location to drop off old American flags for proper retirement.
Islamorada invites everyone to properly retire their old, faded or damaged American flags with honor and in accordance with the United States Flag Code. According to the Flag Code: a flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. The Boy Scouts of America will dispose of the flags in the proper, dignified manner outlined by the United States Flag Code during Flag Retirement Ceremonies held at the Boy Scout Sea Base in Islamorada.
The Village appreciates Brian’s efforts and the efforts of his fellow Eagle Scouts including Chandler Rowland who assisted him with his project. For more information, contact the Islamorada Fire Department at fire.department@islamorada.fl.us or call 305-664-6490 during business hours.
