The Islamorada Fire Rescue Department is a combination career and volunteer organization operating from three (3) fire stations; Station #19 Lower Matecumbe, Station #20 Upper Matecumbe and Station #21 Plantation Key. The department response vehicles include three (3) pumpers, (1) 75’ ladder truck and three (3) rescue/ambulances and one  (1) reserve rescue. There are ten (10) full time firefighter/EMS employees on duty, providing Emergency Medical Service, Rescue and Fire Suppression working a 24/48-hour shift. The Department also has 30 highly dedicated and trained volunteer firefighters that respond to fire and rescue incidents along side of the career firefighters.

The department is statutorily charged with Fire Prevention duties of fire safety plan review and inspections of commercial and multi-family occupancies. Emergency Management responsibilities include planning, preparedness, response and mitigation for man-made or natural disasters. The department also administers and manages a comprehensive training program and provides the community with public education on fire prevention and disaster planning and preparedness as well as provides mutual aid assistance to those agencies in need.

We have an Insurance Service Offices (ISO) rating of 2. Historically, the Fire Rescue Department responds to approximately 1,700 alarms, the majority of which are medical in nature.

Islamorada Fire Rescue Station #20 is officially named Bernard Russell Station. By resolution of Village Council the founder of Islamorada Fire Rescue was honored by naming Station #20 the Bernard Russell Fire Station.
