Renew Park Memberships Now

Islamorada residents are encouraged to come in for their new electronic identification cards and logos. The west (or south) gate of Islamorada Founders Park, where barricades are located currently, soon will open, and residents and park members will be able to use the swipe card system to enter the park and bypass the staffed booth operating at the central entrance of the park. A while ago, the Village of Islamorada issued paper I.D. cards. These will no longer be valid. Islamorada residents are asked to bring a photo I.D. such as a driver's license and two bills or documents with their street address to prove residency to renew their park memberships. Also, people who joined as park members or members of the aquatic center and/or skate park members last September or October will receive notices to renew their memberships. Fees remain the same. Islamorada Founders Park appreciates your patronage and hopes that all members are satisfied with the facilities and will opt to renew.

Water Aerobics Program Offered

Islamorada's Parks and Recreation Department is offering water aerobics at the Islamorada Aquatic Center. Water aerobics increases cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, balance and muscle tone. The program is on a pay-as-you-go basis, so participants are welcome to come as often as they would like. Classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:45 - 7 p.m. by Elizabeth Sassine. Founders Park members pay $5 per lesson, while non-members pay $6.25 per lesson. Students are asked to bring noodles, water bells (floating barbells) and towels to class. For more information, call 853-1685.

Park Program for Developmentally Disabled

Community members who are developmentally disabled enjoyed pool activities. The program aims to appeal to people of all ages who are developmentally disabled. The Islamorada Parks and Recreation Department invited MARC and other community members to participate in swim lessons and a water conditioning program especially designed for the developmentally disabled. In addition to steps into the pool, a special chair also gives access to the water.

The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Registration is daily from 8 a.m. -5 p.m. at the Founders Park Aquatic Center. The cost is $4 per lesson for park members and $5 per lesson for non-members. All Islamorada residents are park members. For more information, please call the Islamorada Parks and Recreation Department at 853-1685.

Founders Park Passes for Residents

Islamorada residents may qualify for an annual park pass by showing an I.D. and two documents with a physical address, e.g., an electric bill, water bill, voters registration or tax bill, to Village staff at the pool and skate park building, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applications for memberships to the pool and skate park are also available there. Temporary residents or "snowbirds" may show an electric bill with an Islamorada address as evidence of residency and will receive a temporary card. A park pass enables free entrance to the park at MM 87 Bayside. But, residents must still pay a fee for entrance to the pool and skate park.
