DELEGATION VISIT TO SOUTH FLORIDA
DISCUSSED EVERGLADES AND WATER QUALITY
ROUNDTABLE HELD IN ISLAMORADA
Islamorada provided the venue for a federal delegation visit to South Florida to discuss the Everglades and water quality on Saturday, October 19. U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), Vice Chair of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, and U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano (CA-32), Chairwoman of the Subcommittee, led the delegation visit to South Florida with local and state elected officials and some important stakeholders in the community. The members hosted a roundtable discussion on Everglades Restoration and the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) for 2020 at Islamorada’s Founders Park Community Center. Included as participants at the roundtable were Islamorada Mayor Deb Gillis and Cheryl Meads representing the South Florida Water Management District.

Public comment was encouraged following the roundtable discussion. Among the commenters were representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers; Alex Gillen, Executive Director of Friends of the Everglades; Kimberly Mitchell with the Everglades Trust; and local fishing guide Captain Steve Friedman representing the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association. After the roundtable, members traveled to take an airboat tour of Everglades National Park.
